Vincent van Gogh created an oil painting titled Houses in Auvers. It was started at the end of May or the beginning of June 1890, not long after he had relocated to the little French town of Auvers-sur-Oise, northwest of Paris. His decision to relocate was motivated by his frustration with the monotony and boredom of asylum life in Saint-Rémy and by his ascent to some notoriety as an artist due to Albert Aurier's lauded appraisal of his work in the Mercure de France in January 1890. Van Gogh created several works from memory that he referred to as "reminisces of the North" during his final two months at Saint-Rémy, evoking his Dutch heritage. At Auvers, the impact of this journey back to the North persisted, especially in F789, The Church at Auvers.
