Noonday Rest, a painting by French artist Jean-François Millet (1814–1875), depicts two individuals dozing off in a field. Millet is most known for his stunning painting Gleaners, which depicts peasants toiling in a field. This picture, which Sargent made when he was 19 years old, is a precise mirror image of the Millet painting. It's most likely a replica of an engraving by Adrien Lavieille, who created a mirror reproduction of the Millet painting in 1873.
