At least 15 olive tree paintings by Vincent van Gogh were created, mainly in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in 1889. From May 1889 to May 1890, he resided at an asylum there at his desire and painted the facility's gardens and, when permitted to leave its boundaries, the close-by olive trees, cypresses, and wheat fields. Olive Trees in a Mountainous Landscape was one picture that accompanied The Starry Night. Van Gogh attached particular emphasis to the paintings of olive trees. A group created in May 1889 symbolised life, the divine, and the circle of life, while those made in November 1889 were an attempt by the artist to express his thoughts regarding Christ in Gethsemane.
